Preparing Cancer Medicines
WINTER
In winter Stoney Creek sleeps - the traditional time of rest for the people of Saik'uz.

Sophie prepares medicines - natural gifts from the earth combined with spiritual strength. Sophie believes you must deal with the soul as well as the body.

She makes her cancer medicine. First she boils together choke-cherry and wild raspberry branches that she gathered in the summer, and then separately, Sophie boils the main ingredient - the red mountain-alder.

When asked about the power of her medicines, Sophie replies, "The Creator does the healing. I am only a servant."
